Pet Surgery

Pets undergo surgery for all kinds of reasons. Some procedures are minor and others can be more complicated. At Westbird Animal Hospital in Miami, FL, a vet on our team can perform pet surgery to help keep your furry friend happy and healthy. We have an in-suite surgical center that offers a clean and safe space for pets.

What Procedures Might Pets Need?

Pets may be recommended for surgery for multiple reasons. Some may need a procedure for serious injuries and others might have surgery to help ease pain from a chronic condition.

Here are some of the procedures our veterinary team can provide:

●             Spaying and neutering

●             Soft tissue surgery

●             Tooth extractions

●             Mass or tumor removal

●             Orthopedic surgery

●             Bowel obstruction

●             Foreign object removal

How Do I Prepare My Pet for Surgery?

Before the surgery, you’ll receive instructions for making sure your pet is ready for their procedure. This usually involves not giving your pet any food for several hours beforehand. You may also need to limit the amount of water he drinks prior to surgery.

Will My Animal Need General Anesthesia?

It depends on the surgery your pet is getting. Local anesthesia may be used for minor procedures and general anesthesia may be used for larger surgeries.

During surgery, even though your pet might not be feeling pain due to the local anesthesia, the experience may still feel unnatural, causing the pet to become scared and potentially aggressive/uncooperative. General anesthesia prevents this from happening so that your pet is more comfortable and everyone involved, including both the vet and your pet, are safe.

What Happens after Pet Surgery?

Your pet will need time to recover but the amount of time it will take depends on the type of procedure he had and other factors. You’ll also likely get a list of instructions to follow to help him heal. This might include the following:

●             Keeping your pet somewhere quiet and calm

●             Restricting his exercise and activities

●             Keeping a cone on him so he can’t chew or scratch the incision

●             Watching for signs of infection, such as swelling or redness

●             Bringing your pet in for follow-up care
