Pet Dental

Pet dental disease is caused by a buildup of old food and bacteria that then turn into plaque and tartar, harming not only a pet's dental health but their overall health as well.

The disease can even progress to the point of becoming an infection, potentially working its way into the bloodstream and causing damage to vital organs. That's why, at Westbird Animal Hospital in Miami, FL, we encourage all of our clients to bring their pets for dental exams. Regular check-ups and cleanings are one of the best defenses your pet has against dental problems. Here's some more information about pet dental care:

What Are the Symptoms of Pet Dental Problems?

Your pet can't tell you when he is having dental pain, so it can be important to be aware of the symptoms that include:

  • Bad breath
  • Tartar buildup
  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Drooling
  • Poor appetite
  • Bleeding gums
  • Nasal discharge

What Happens at a Pet Dental Exam?

When your pet comes to our animal hospital for their annual dental exam, they will likely be placed under general anesthesia. This is to help ensure the pet does not experience any pain, does not move during the procedure and does not experience any anxiety.

There will be a dental exam after your pet is put under anesthesia, including x-rays to examine the roots of the teeth. Next, a thorough cleaning or scraping and polishing of the teeth will be done, including the use of a sealant. This can help remove all the tartar and plaque from above and below the gumline. We will then determine if there are any other issues that need to be addressed and develop a plan with you. If any teeth are unhealthy, it is recommended they be removed.

What Can You Do at Home?

Regular brushing with a pet toothpaste may be a useful part of your pet's dental health. Buying your pet dental chews and dental toys may also help strengthen the teeth and help loosen food particles and bacteria. A proper diet may also help with dental health. Thankfully, a vet on our team can recommend food that's right for your pets' needs.
